We had lots of servers and virtual machines in our network. When we first set up those virtual machines, we started with the manufacturer’s recommendations for the setup on the physical box. The manufacturer would tell us, ‘you need 4GB of RAM, 2 dual-core CPUs, and a certain amount of hard disk space.’ But we wanted to go beyond that and try to ‘right-size’ each of our VMs.

We wanted access to some new tools available with the new versions of Exchange and Active Directory. Plus, Microsoft was about to stop supporting our versions of the software. That gave us sort of a push.
